One day in San Rafael officers found a bedraggled young shepherd tied to a bench in the pouring rain. Despite being brought to the shelter where she was warm and dry and fed, Mariah found her new circumstances and kennel life in general not to her liking. Shy and sensitive by nature, she found it difficult to cope with all the environmental stimuli. She was uneasy around new people and afraid of a crate. She was much more comfortable in the outdoors and around other dogs. But there was something in those beautiful dark eyes...

This sleek dark beauty spent some quality time in the home of one of our behavior volunteers. Mariah appears to have made much progress in a home environment where she is not exposed to kennel noise and people all day long. Her foster parents worked on housetraining, which is going well. Mariah also now goes into her crate and will retire there when she needs peace and quiet.

The resident cats in the foster home have trained Mariah to be respectful. She enjoys the company of other dogs and plays appropriately. Her training is progressing and she seems to enjoy pleasing her handler. Mariah loves to play with toys, especially a good game of tug. With her youthful energy, she will need lots of daily exercise in the form of long rambling walks and some vigorous runs.

A family with experience and the willingness and patience to work with an extremely intelligent and sensitive dog would be the best situation for Mariah. Children should be respectful of her personality and act accordingly under adult supervision. Mariah is available for adoption from her foster home and it is our hope that her new family will continue to make progress in bringing out the wonderful qualities of this lovely dog.

Mariah is living with her foster mom and cats in Tiburon.  We are helping Marin Humane by posting her here.  If you'd like to meet Mariah, let us know and we will put you in touch!
