New volunteer Emma Kearn is writing a series of posts about the many reasons to Choose a Rescue Dog Instead of Buying from a Breeder. This is the final part.
Millions of adoptable pets are euthanized in the US every year, and while no-kill shelters do all they can to save the lives of as many dogs as possible, there are always more dogs that need help.
Choosing to adopt a rescue dog rather than buying a puppy from a breeder may feel like a drop in the bucket in terms of helping solve the problem, but every little bit makes a difference, and there are many rewarding reasons to bring a rescue dog into your home.
You might inspire others to adopt rescue dogs
Some people avoid choosing rescue dogs because they mistakenly think that the dogs have something wrong with them.
The sad fact is, most dogs are abandoned not because of health or behavioral reasons, but just because the owners are unwilling or unable to take care of them any longer.
Unfortunately, myths about rescue dogs as difficult or unhealthy may contribute to the reluctance of potential owners to adopt.
Bringing home a rescue dog may inspire the urge to adopt in friends or family who might otherwise have purchased a puppy from a pet store or breeder—and those people in turn may do the same for others.
Only recently a family met one of our dogs at a neighbor. They contacted us and now have their own GSD and the two are playmates!
Our team has placed over one thousand German Shepherds into their new homes and have years of experience of hearing from happy owners with their delightful new dogs.
