Bay Area German Shepherd Rescue

New volunteer Emma Kearn is writing a series of posts about the many reasons to Choose a Rescue Dog Instead of Buying from a Breeder

Millions of adoptable pets are euthanized in the US every year, and while no-kill shelters do all they can to save the lives of as many dogs as possible, there are always more dogs that need help.

Choosing to adopt a rescue dog rather than buying a puppy from a breeder may feel like a drop in the bucket in terms of helping solve the problem, but every little bit makes a difference, and there are many rewarding reasons to bring a rescue dog into your home.

An adult dog is less demanding than a puppy

When you buy a pedigree dog from a breeder, you’re typically buying a puppy—and while puppies rate extremely high on the adorable scale, they’re also highly demanding, with a long list of needs and sometimes, bad habits that need to be addressed. Chewing shoes, playing tug-of-war with the curtains, and other behavior, is par for the course with puppies, especially while they’re teething, but by choosing an adult rescue dog you can pretty much avoid this problem altogether.

An adult rescue dog (like Ava pictured here) is likely to be housetrained, and have long grown out of all those bad habits that make life with a puppy something of a trying experience. Rescue dogs do sometimes have bad habits, but generally, no-kill shelters do their best to solve these problems before adopting dogs out.
