Bay Area German Shepherd Rescue

Santa RosaToday we were in Santa Rosa at Petco for our first adoption event at this location.

We started out at 10am with setting up - we had a wonderful turnout of volunteers. If you've ever thought of being involved in dog rescue, coming along to an adoption event is so much fun.

The team brought cookies, muffins and all sorts of goodies. We'd managed to get a large piece of carpet donated by a GSD lover who owns a carpet store.  Brian went to work with his knife and turned it into mats for the dogs. Chris had made a super cool device to hang our vertical banners.

What makes a successful adoption day?

Of course it's getting dogs into their new homes.  It's also about meeting the public and educating them about rescue. As a rescue group we are different in that we don't mind who you adopt from as long as you adopt and save a GSD. We'll, even recommend dogs from other groups.

Today we met literally hundreds of people over 3 packed hours. If you were there, it was great seeing you. If not, maybe in December! And yes, we're going to have a record November, adopting more dogs than we ever imagined!

Five dogs, lots of volunteers, cookies and fun. Hope to see you there!

What a day! Was this the best adoption event ever? Thanks to everyone who turned out as volunteers - we have ever seen so many before!

This let us run two separate locations in the store and the KoruK9 team helped with training advice.

We were besieged by approved adopters and the public for three solid hours.  Now add in 9 dogs including a very special new puppy arrival!

We have three dogs who are all going to their homes in the next few days - woo hoo!

So many people are commenting about the tee shirts, we are going to have to start letting adopters have them.

Very special thanks to Trish and Debbie who set up the wonderful Odin display that showed so many people about therapy, medical recovery and rescue.  So many people were impressed by the work we are doing to help medically challenged or injured dogs.

I honestly cannot remember having more fun and feeling more proud.

Yesterday we had our monthly event in Novato.  We had a great volunteer turnout including 3 new volunteers a new trainer and a new foster parent!  Lots of people came by to see the dogs, get training tips and eat cookies.

Skye is adoption pending and a lady from South of San Jose drove up to meet Raja and adopt him.

Our next event is in Danville and you can see the location and get directions here.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered, adopted and dropped by.

This weekend in San Rafael is the annual Bay Area Pet Fair & Adoptathon.  We went down to see what was going on. It was very hot and very busy and we met many friends in the rescue business. It does not matter whether it's rabbits, cats, dogs or even chickens.  We all do it because we care for these animals (and birds).

The Bay Area Pet Fair and Adoptathon is a large 2 day event that features exhibitions from the Novato and San Rafael K9 teams, dock diving and many other interesting activities. Once again, our friends at Petfood Express are a major sponsor and organizer.  The event is outdoors and indoors.

Next year we will have our own stand for Bay Area German Shepherd Rescue. We felt that this year was too soon for us to ask our volunteers to spend 2 days on their feet talking with thousands of visitors.

Dave and Roxanne and the whole crew at DogTrekker were there doing a wonderful job and offering a sensational prize of a weekend stay at a spa. Rocket Dogs were crazy busy.  We also met up with California Animal Rescue who we see at our Santa Rosa event.

We chatted with Christine and our friends at Golden State German Shepherd Rescue. They were flying the flag for German Shepherds. They are an awesome team and group and do an amazing job for the dogs. Special mention to Jane and the whole team at Norsled who specialize in rescuing Huskies.

If you love dogs, the Bay Area Pet Fair and Adoptathon is alot of fun! You'll see it advertised everywhere a few weeks before it happens.

Our dogs are super smart and learn very quickly with the right direction.  We are often asked to recommend a dog trainer by people who adopt their new dog.  Our belief is that trainer works with you to help you train your dog. Over the coming days and weeks we will be creating a list with contacts.  We will only list trainers that our members have personally worked with and recommend.

Based in Novato, they offer an extraordinary range of training and behavior classes at very affordable prices. Many of our volunteers have undertaken their dog training classes with their personal dogs.  We are huge fans of Dawn and her entire team. See them on line here and call them on (415) 883-4621

Lisa Caper runs DogOvation covering Marin County.  Several of our volunteers have worked with her and they give great reports.  Like all the best trainers her focus is more on training the owner to train the dog.  You can read all about Lisa's philosophy on her website here and phone her at : (415) 299-1158
